About Roots Mastic Liqueur

The earliest reference to Mastic is from 5th Century BC, in works by Herodotus and Hippocrates, where the spirit is praised for its medicinal and digestive properties.  Mastic's essential ingredient is derived from the Greek island of Chios, the only place where the fabled mastic resin tree grows.

Despite its ancient roots, this is a thoroughly modern brand which is using traditional liqueur recipes and unique rare ingredients found only in Greece to reinvent what Greek-heritage liqueurs can be.

These liqueurs belong in the same category as triple sec, amaro, maraschino, amaretto and various bitters.  They are premium and all-natural, produced with no additives, flavor or color enhancers of any kind.

“Originating from a 160 year-old distillery, the finest roots spirits combine four generations of distilling with an original approach to liqueurs. Based in southern Greece, its distillers maintain a long established tradition of crafting exotic blends as well as redefining and shaping Greece’s most distinctive flavors.”- Bar Magazine

Cocktail and craft spirits enthusiasts often enjoy the Roots Rakomelo Sweet Liqueur as well.

Tasting Notes

Very similar to its appearance, the taste of this liquor is clean and crisp. It has an elegant aroma that is soft and refreshing. The taste is undeniably clean with subtle hints of lavender, coconut and finally a minty freshness that lingers on the palate with a nutty finish.

Suggested Serves

  • Mastic & tonic for a refreshing sipper.
  • Enjoy the Mastic Mule, a Greek version of the Moscow Mule with the addition of mastic and herb-infused simple syrup.

Production Notes

Mastic resin is harvested across the Mediterranean. However, the variety cultivated exclusively on the island of Chios is the only one that produces the resinous 'tears' which are used to make mastic (also called Mastika or Mastiha) liqueur.

Roots uses a traditional recipe for herbal remedies to handcraft its liqueurs. This modern expression is distilled to enticing perfection, served up perfectly for sipping and mixing.

It starts with the careful selection of all-natural, unique ingredients. Expertise, time, and precision are all central to the extraction process, which maintains the most precious aromatic qualities of the ingredients while also ensuring a full and balanced taste.

    Refreshing!

Just got this in the mail today, I had never heard of Mastic before and took a chance on it because of the free shipping, and this may honestly be my new favorite liqueur! This was amazingly refreshing to drink all by itself. It has a pleasantly cooling sensation like mint gum, and very clean and pure. It's definitely medicinal, but in a good way. There is a sweet spiciness like cinnamon, no bitterness at all but some slight astringency and citrus notes. If you like Chartreuse you will love this! I can't wait to try it with lime like the bottle suggests, but I'm really enjoying it plain right now!

    Crisp and refreshing!

I vacationed in Chios for about a month and really enjoyed the mastiha flavor they put in everything, but especially the liqueurs, so I was looking forward to trying the Roots version. It's very tasty, with a clean woody scent from the resin and citrusy evergreen flavor. It shows about the same sweetness as the Chian liqueurs, but not as much mastiha flavor. The mastiha is still very much there, but more muted than I was expecting. I think I might like Roots' Vintage Strength more, as it has more mastiha in it.

But this version is still very enjoyable!
