Caer Maiko and Sharon Yeung, the founders of Daijoubu Pop Up: Super Asian Cocktails and the doyennes of blending enchanting and dynamic flavors for artful drinks, know a thing or two about what Japanese whisky can bring to the bar. Here, they recommend some of the most interesting Japanese whiskies available these days!
“Being as Kikori Japanese Whiskey is derived from rice, it was a no-brainer that this would lend a clean yet luscious backbone to the cocktails in this box. Kikori’s stone fruit notes and velvety texture work incredibly well in a cocktail but are also so enjoyable when sipped neat!
“Suntory’s Toki is probably the best-known Japanese whisky in the US and for good reason. This blend includes Chita grain (a grain from the Chita Peninsula known for its smoothness, versatility, and sweetness) and House of Suntory’s famous Hakushu malt (which is verdant, crisp, and smokey), so it's automatically hard to beat. It has subtle notes of coconut, peppermint, ginger, and vanilla, which all blend beautifully in drinks.
“Mars Shinshu Iwai 45 Japanese Blended Whisky is a great intro to Japanese whisky for those who usually drink American whiskey. Aged in ex-bourbon barrels and utilizing 75% corn in its mash bill, it has plenty of crossover with bourbon but still tastes distinctly Japanese. The higher proof and the fruit notes in the whisky also stand up nicely in cocktails!”
