Mount Rigi Swiss Aperitif is a Aperitifs  crafted in Switzerland.

Mount Rigi Swiss Aperitif is a unique blend of Alpine herbs and spices, offering a taste of the Swiss mountains in every sip. Interestingly, this aperitif is made using water from the Rigi mountain spring, which is naturally filtered through layers of rock dating back to the Tertiary period, over 65 million years ago.

Why We Love It

Mount Rigi Swiss Aperitif offers cocktail lovers a refreshing twist on traditional aperitifs, blending Swiss Alpine herbs with citrus notes for a uniquely crisp and versatile flavor profile. Unlike most rums, this Swiss-made spirit is crafted using pure glacier water and locally-sourced botanicals, including gentian, lemon balm, and elderflower, resulting in a distinctly Alpine character that shines in both classic and modern cocktail recipes.

How to Drink It

Mount Rigi Swiss Aperitif shines when sipped chilled and neat, allowing its delicate herbal notes to fully blossom on the palate. It's also a fantastic addition to light, refreshing cocktails perfect for warm summer evenings, and pairs beautifully with alpine cheeses, cured meats, and fresh fruit desserts.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Fresh alpine herbs, particularly thyme and rosemary. Bright citrus notes of lemon zest and grapefruit. Subtle hints of honey and wildflowers.

Palate: Crisp and herbaceous with a balance of sweet and bitter. Prominent flavors of gentian root and wormwood. Notes of orange peel and chamomile tea. Light, refreshing mouthfeel with a touch of sweetness.

Finish: Clean and dry with lingering herbal bitterness. Gentle warmth from the alcohol. Faint echoes of pine and mountain flowers. Leaves the palate feeling refreshed and ready for another sip.

How It's Made

Mount Rigi Swiss Aperitif is crafted using a blend of 13 botanicals, including Swiss herbs and spices, which are macerated in a grape-based spirit. The unique production process involves aging the aperitif in oak barrels at high altitude on Mount Rigi itself, allowing the crisp mountain air to influence the flavor development and impart a distinctive Alpine character to the final product.

Fun Facts

  • Mount Rigi Swiss Aperitif contains 42 different Alpine herbs and flowers, including edelweiss, which is so rare and protected that special permits are required to harvest it for the liqueur's production.
  • The aperitif's unique golden hue comes from saffron grown on the slopes of Mount Rigi itself, making it one of the few spirits in the world that uses locally-sourced saffron as a key ingredient.
  • Mount Rigi Swiss Aperitif was originally created in the 19th century as a medicinal tonic for tourists visiting the mountain, believed to help prevent altitude sickness and aid digestion at high elevations.

An unexpected mellow, sweet, and floral liqueur

I was expecting something a bit more robust and bitter since this product is marketed as an aperitif. Instead I was presented with a fairly delicate, floral taste that is somewhat thick on the palate. I've had the most success making cocktails where I balance the Mount Rigi with an amaro or, most successfully, Fey Anme to draw out pineapple notes in a cocktail. This has largely joined Italicus as my pair of surprising utility liqueurs.

    Worth a try

This is sweeter than I was expecting. But that’s ok, I enjoy it on the rocks for dessert.

We definitely recommend in trying this out in a Spritz. Or use in cocktails as a substitute for another liqueur like Luxardo Maraschino. There are also some recipes linked on the product page that may steer you in the right direction. Hope you can continue to experiment and find something that suits you! Cheers.
