Balcones Brimstone Whisky is a Whiskey from the Balcones Whisky Collection brand hailing from America.

What is Balcones Brimstone Whisky?

Balcones Brimstone Whisky stands out with its unique smoky profile, achieved by smoking the whisky itself rather than the grains. This unconventional Texas spirit pays homage to the Lone Star State's barbecue traditions, using sun-baked scrub oak native to the region to impart its distinctive smoky character.

Why do we love Balcones Brimstone Whisky?

Balcones Brimstone Whisky stands out for its innovative "corn whisky" approach, where Texas scrub oak smoke is applied directly to the corn before fermentation, rather than smoking the finished whisky. This unique process creates a bold, savory profile with notes of campfire, barbecue, and spice that's unlike any traditional scotch or American whiskey, making it a must-try for adventurous cocktail enthusiasts seeking a truly Texan whisky experience.

How do you drink Balcones Brimstone Whisky?

Balcones Brimstone Whisky shines when sipped neat or with a single large ice cube, allowing its unique smoky character to take center stage. This bold spirit also excels in smoky variations of classic whiskey cocktails and pairs wonderfully with barbecue or grilled meats, making it an ideal choice for outdoor gatherings on crisp autumn evenings.

Nose: Smoky barbecue and campfire aromas dominate, accompanied by hints of burnt sugar and charred wood. Subtle notes of roasted corn and caramel emerge as the whisky opens up.

Palate: Intense smokiness reminiscent of mesquite and hickory, balanced by sweet corn and toffee flavors. Spicy notes of black pepper and cinnamon add complexity. The texture is oily and full-bodied.

Finish: Long and warming, with persistent smoke and a touch of sweetness. Lingering flavors of smoked meat, dark chocolate, and oak tannins. A slight astringency and peppery heat round out the experience.

Balcones Brimstone Whisky stands out for its unique smoking process, where Texas scrub oak smoke is applied directly to the grain before distillation, rather than to the finished whisky. This innovative technique infuses the spirit with a bold, smoky character from the very beginning, resulting in a whisky that captures the essence of a Texas campfire in every sip.

  • Balcones Brimstone Whisky is smoked using scrub oak, a technique inspired by Texas barbecue traditions. This unique process gives the whisky its signature campfire-like flavor, setting it apart from traditional Scottish peated whiskies.
  • The distillers at Balcones accidentally created Brimstone when experimenting with smoking blue corn for their True Blue whisky. The unexpected result was so popular, it became a permanent part of their lineup.
  • Despite its intense smoky profile, Brimstone is made from 100% corn, making it technically a corn whisky rather than a bourbon. This unusual combination of ingredients and technique has earned it the nickname "Texas campfire in a glass."

      Excellent dark whisky

I was first drawn to the almost purple color of this whisky and knew I had to get it. It is good neat, but even better on the rocks thanks to the slightly higher-than-normal ABV. Chilled, one can taste the difference in original grain (blue corn), as well as a wonderful smokiness. This isn't a Laphraoig, it isn't earthy, but it does have a nice smoke to it that isn't overpowering or all that one tastes. I'm looking forward to buying it again when I run out!
