Brennivin Aquavit 1L is part of our Aquavit collection. It is crafted in Iceland.
Brennivin Aquavit, Iceland's signature spirit, is affectionately known as "Black Death" due to its stark black label and potent flavor profile. This caraway-forward aquavit gained unexpected international fame when it was featured in the popular TV show "Game of Thrones" as the drink of choice for the Wildlings, sparking curiosity among fans and spirit enthusiasts alike.
Brennivin Aquavit isn't a rum at all, but rather Iceland's signature spirit - a caraway-flavored aquavit that's been produced since 1935. Its uniquely savory profile, featuring notes of anise and angelica root alongside the dominant caraway, makes it a fascinating base for cocktails that crave herbaceous complexity, while its cultural significance as the "Black Death" of Iceland adds an intriguing backstory to every sip.
Brennivín Aquavit shines when sipped neat or on the rocks, allowing its caraway-forward profile to take center stage, though it also adds a distinctive Nordic twist to spirit-forward cocktails. This Icelandic spirit is perfectly suited for cold winter nights, pairing wonderfully with hearty, rich foods like smoked fish, cured meats, and aged cheeses.
Nose: Caraway seeds dominate, reminiscent of rye bread. Sharp, herbaceous notes of angelica root and cumin follow. A subtle hint of potato spirit provides an earthy backdrop.
Palate: Caraway remains prominent, joined by a peppery warmth. Fennel and dill add complexity. The potato base lends a smooth, slightly oily texture. A touch of sweetness balances the savory elements.
Finish: Long and warming. The caraway slowly fades, leaving lingering notes of dried herbs and a gentle spiciness. A clean, slightly mentholated sensation refreshes the palate.
Brennivin Aquavit is crafted in Iceland using a traditional process that begins with fermenting locally-grown potatoes into a mash, which is then distilled and infused with caraway seeds and other botanicals. What's unique about Brennivin's production is its use of pure Icelandic spring water and the fact that it's filtered through lava rocks, imparting a subtle minerality and smoothness to the final spirit.

Love Brennivín. Pairs well either way a variety of foods and drinks. Easy drinking, doesn’t hurt too bad if you overdo it.
Clean, crisp, tasty Brennivín. Nice flavor like herbal schnapps, very easy drinking. Maybe more like caraway vodka? Good with a variety of foods and beers. Love me some Black Death.
Fell in love with this in Iceland! Love the buzz, you can drink a lot and not get hungover which is even better :)
Flying into Keflavik my friend and I found ourselves weary from Jet Lag and many hours of travel. As we sat at the hotel bar waiting for our rooms to be ready we asked for a local drink and were served Brennevin ice cold and neat. We were immediately brought back to life with the cool, crisp, and flavourful mouthful of boozy wonderful.
I've been looking for Brenevin ever since and this is the first time in 5 years I've found it for sale. I couldn't be happier.
