Batavia Arrack van Oosten is a Other Rum  crafted in Indonesia.

Batavia Arrack van Oosten is a unique Indonesian spirit made from sugarcane and fermented red rice, offering a complex flavor profile that's both funky and refined. Interestingly, this spirit played a crucial role in the original Swedish Punch recipes of the 18th and 19th centuries, making it an essential ingredient for cocktail enthusiasts looking to recreate authentic historical drinks.

Why We Love It

Cocktail enthusiasts should embrace Batavia Arrack van Oosten for its complex, funky flavor profile that combines the best qualities of rum and agricole rhum with a distinctly Indonesian twist. Unlike most rums, this spirit is made from sugarcane and red rice, then fermented with local wild yeasts before being pot-distilled and aged in teak wood vats, resulting in a truly one-of-a-kind flavor that can add depth and intrigue to classic and modern cocktails alike.

How to Drink It

Batavia Arrack van Oosten shines in complex, spice-forward cocktails, particularly those with a tropical or tiki flair, though it can also be savored neat or over ice for a truly unique experience. This versatile spirit is perfect for warm summer evenings, pairing wonderfully with bold, aromatic dishes like Indonesian satay or spicy Thai curries that complement its robust, funky character.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Fermented molasses dominates, accompanied by grassy sugarcane notes. Subtle hints of overripe banana and pineapple emerge, alongside a faint smokiness reminiscent of charred wood. A touch of licorice and clove adds complexity.

Palate: Bold and funky with a heavy rum-like character. Roasted nuts and dark chocolate mingle with dried fruits, particularly raisins and dates. The spice notes intensify, bringing forward black pepper and nutmeg. A slight medicinal quality reminiscent of iodine lingers in the background.

Finish: Long and warming. The initial sweetness fades, giving way to dry, earthy tones. Tobacco leaf and leather notes become more prominent. A lingering spiciness tingles on the tongue, accompanied by a subtle saltiness that evokes memories of sea air.

How It's Made

Batavia Arrack van Oosten is a unique Indonesian spirit crafted from sugarcane molasses and fermented red rice. The mixture undergoes a lengthy fermentation process before being distilled in traditional pot stills, then aged in large teak vats for up to 8 years, resulting in a complex, aromatic spirit with notes of funk, spice, and tropical fruit.

Fun Facts

  • Batavia Arrack van Oosten isn't actually a type of rum, despite its sugarcane base. It's a unique spirit that incorporates fermented red rice, giving it a complex flavor profile that's been described as a cross between rum, sake, and cognac.
  • This spirit played a crucial role in the creation of Swedish Punsch, a liqueur that became so popular in 19th-century Sweden that it sparked a cultural phenomenon known as "punschveranda" - the practice of drinking punsch on one's veranda during summer evenings.
  • Batavia Arrack van Oosten's name is steeped in history: "Batavia" refers to the old Dutch name for Jakarta, Indonesia, while "Arrack" comes from the Arabic word "araq," meaning sweat - a poetic nod to the droplets that form during distillation.

    Really unique rum-like liqour

I love Batavia Arrack, but it's not for everyone. I even like it for sipping, but it's basically a take on rum that you can use in cocktails.

I immediately fell in love with Batavia arrack

I'd seen Batavia arrack used in some of the cocktails that my favorite YouTubers crafted. I was intrigued enough to buy a bottle, and I'm so glad that I did! I instantly loved this fresh spirit with rum funkiness and a long finish of cane syrup. I couldn't quite enjoy sipping this neat, but I've been experimenting with it in just about any cocktail that calls for rum, substituting some or all of the rum with Batavia arrack. I was shocked to find that I really like a blend of demerara rum with Batavia arrack in eggnog, for example. If you like rum, rhum agricole, and cachaça, then I suspect you'll appreciate Batavia arrack, too.
