Tasting Notes

Opening citrus notes mix with scents of Mediterranean herbs: rosemary, sage, juniper, myrtle, and aromatic resins.  On the palate, bitter orange hints, balanced with the sweet spicy notes of licorice and Mediterranean herbs. A velvety and harmoniously round texture leads into an intense, bittersweet, smooth finish.

Suggested Serves

As is tradition, pour over ice, add an orange twist, and savor small sips. Or kick things up a notch - swap Averna for Vermouth to enjoy a Black Manhattan.

Production Notes

No one knows exactly how Averna is made. But here's what we do know: more than 60 ingredients, including lemon, bitter orange, and pomegranate peels are macerated and infused in a neutral spirit, then aged for 18 months in oak barrique barrels, resulting in this amaro to remember.

More than 150 years ago in Caltanisatta, Sicily, Don Salvatore Averna was gifted this amaro recipe from the friar of Abbazzio di Santo Spirito. The brand was created in 1868 and the recipe has remained a closely held secret since that time. Today the brand is a staple in every Italian home, and is still produced using the original secret recipe.
