Papalin Réunion 10 Year Rum is a Dark Rum  crafted in Réunion.

This tropical-aged Réunion blend marries four different rums ranging from 10 to 15 years old into a single bottling that captures everything from chocolate-orange elegance to funky Grand Arôme intensity, all at a robust 50% ABV.

Why We Love It

Bottled at a robust 50% ABV from French oak casks, this limited release of just 3,608 bottles showcases the remarkable depth possible when traditional molasses and high-ester rums mature together under island conditions, creating layers that shift from fresh citrus and mango to rooty ginger, apricot stone, and cocoa-dusted tea.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Opens with bright orange peel and dark chocolate, like a Terry's chocolate orange just broken apart.

Palate: Fresh orange juice leads, tart and sweet at once. The middle shifts to spicy ginger root and gentian, warmed by brown sugar that tastes like it came straight from the cane field.

Finish: Cocoa powder and red tea linger long, bringing back all those fruits from earlier.

How It's Made

This Papalin Réunion 10 Year is a masterful blend of four different traditional molasses and Grand Arôme rums aged between 10 and 15 years, all matured entirely in French oak casks under the tropical climate of Réunion island—a unique aging environment that accelerates maturation and intensifies the interaction between spirit and wood, creating a distinctive empyreumatic and fruity character that sets it apart from continental-aged rums.

Fun Facts

  • Réunion Island produces some of the world's most aromatic rums thanks to its volcanic soil and unique microclimates—the same terroir that makes it one of the only places on earth where vanilla orchids grow wild, contributing to the island's rums having naturally complex, spice-forward profiles without any additives.
  • The "Grand Arôme" rum in this blend is made using a traditional fermentation technique that can last up to three weeks (compared to just 24-48 hours for most rums), creating extraordinarily high ester levels that give the spirit its funky, fruity character—some Grand Arôme rums contain ester counts rivaling Jamaican high-ester styles, yet with a distinctly French elegance.
  • Velier's "tropical dependent bottler" approach means these rums aged entirely in Réunion's humid heat, where the angels' share can reach 10% per year (versus 2% in Scotland)—so this 10-year-old rum has lost roughly the same volume to evaporation as a 50-year-old Scotch whisky, resulting in incredibly concentrated flavors and a tiny yield of just 3,608 bottles.
