Velier Royal Navy Rum is a Other Rum  crafted in Caribbean.

Velier Royal Navy Rum resurrects the legendary blending style of the British Royal Navy's daily rum rations, combining aged pot still rums from Guyana, Jamaica, and the now-silent Caroni distillery in Trinidad.

Why We Love It

It's a masterfully blended "vatted" expression that unites legendary pot still rums from Guyana (including the now-silent Demerara stills), Jamaica, and Trinidad's iconic Caroni distillery, with a weighted average age of over 17 years and bottled at authentic Navy Strength (57.18% ABV) without any added sugar or colorants.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Rich molasses and dark brown sugar hit first, followed by dried figs, prunes, and raisins stewed in dark rum.

Palate: Powerful and thick, coating the mouth immediately. Dark treacle and blackstrap molasses dominate, with waves of espresso, dark chocolate, and burnt sugar.

Finish: Long and drying with lingering licorice, charred oak, and espresso grounds. The funk fades slowly, leaving behind dark chocolate, pipe tobacco, and a subtle mintiness.

How It's Made

Velier Royal Navy Rum is a carefully vatted blend combining pot still rums from three former British colonies Guyana (including legendary Demerara stills), Jamaica (high-ester tropical funk), and Trinidad (including rare stocks from the shuttered Caroni distillery) with very old European-aged rums blended with younger tropical-aged expressions to achieve a weighted average age of over 17 years. What makes this production truly fascinating is that it revives the historic "Navy style" blending philosophy, marrying rums of different ages and origins to create a complex, layered profile bottled at authentic Navy Strength (57.18% ABV) without any added sugar or coloring.

Fun Facts

  • This rum contains liquid from Trinidad's Caroni distillery, which shut down in 2003 and has since achieved cult status among collectors.
  • The 57.18% ABV isn't random swagger it's a precise nod to history. British Navy rum had to be "proof" strong enough that if accidentally spilled on gunpowder, the powder would still ignite. That magic number? Right around 57%, ensuring sailors got the real deal and not watered-down grog.
