Brennivin Aquavit is crafted in Iceland using a traditional process that begins with fermenting locally-grown potatoes into a mash, which is then distilled and infused with caraway seeds and other botanicals. What's unique about Brennivin's production is its use of pure Icelandic spring water and the fact that it's filtered through lava rocks, imparting a subtle minerality and smoothness to the final spirit.

Brennivin Aquavit, often called "Black Death" in Iceland, was once used as a test of manhood. Young Icelandic men would prove their toughness by downing a shot without flinching, despite its potent 37.5% ABV and strong caraway flavor.

Unlike most aquavits which are aged in oak, Brennivin is completely unaged. This unique production method preserves the raw, intense flavors of caraway and wild Icelandic herbs, creating a spirit that truly captures the essence of Iceland's rugged landscape.

During Iceland's prohibition era (1915-1935), Brennivin was one of the few legal alcohols available, as it was classified as a medicinal tonic. This loophole allowed Icelanders to continue enjoying their national spirit, albeit under the guise of "medicine."

A Taste of Iceland
Flying into Keflavik my friend and I found ourselves weary from Jet Lag and many hours of travel. As we sat at the hotel bar waiting for our rooms to be ready we asked for a local drink and were served Brennevin ice cold and neat. We were immediately brought back to life with the cool, crisp, and flavourful mouthful of boozy wonderful.
I've been looking for Brenevin ever since and this is the first time in 5 years I've found it for sale. I couldn't be happier.

Exceptional sipping
After a trip to Iceland, we decided to make some Icelandic inspired meals for the family. To kick it off, we served cold Brennivin with tubed meats and cheeses. Everyone had an opinion and the bottle was gone by the end. Loved it.

It made a good mix with the Allspice liquor, but anything would. It was smooth and clean but just didn't tickle me. Your mileage may vary.
