Bénédictine D.O.M. Liqueur is a Liqueur hailing from France.

What is Bénédictine D.O.M. Liqueur?

Bénédictine D.O.M. Liqueur is a complex herbal elixir with a secret recipe dating back to 1510, created by a Benedictine monk named Dom Bernardo Vincelli. Surprisingly, during Prohibition in the United States, the distillery produced a non-alcoholic version called "B and B" (Bénédictine and Brandy) to maintain its presence in the American market, which later evolved into the popular cocktail ingredient we know today.

Why do we love Bénédictine D.O.M. Liqueur?

Cocktail enthusiasts should appreciate Bénédictine D.O.M. Liqueur for its complex, herbaceous profile crafted from a secret blend of 27 herbs and spices, a recipe closely guarded since 1510. Unlike rum, which is distilled from sugarcane byproducts, Bénédictine is a liqueur based on neutral spirits and sweetened with honey, offering a distinctive mix of warm spices, citrus, and floral notes that can add depth and intrigue to a wide range of cocktails.

How do you drink Bénédictine D.O.M. Liqueur?

Bénédictine D.O.M. Liqueur shines when sipped neat at room temperature, allowing its complex herbal and spice notes to unfold fully on the palate. It also excels in spirit-forward cocktails or as a modifier in whiskey-based drinks, and pairs beautifully with rich desserts or strong cheeses on cool autumn evenings.

Nose: Herbal and floral aromas dominate, with notes of honey, citrus peel, and warm spices. Hints of vanilla and nutmeg add depth. The scent is complex but not overwhelming, reminiscent of an herb garden on a warm day.

Palate: Sweet and syrupy at first, with flavors of caramel and honey. The herbal notes from the nose come through strongly, particularly sage and thyme. Citrus zest adds brightness, while cinnamon and nutmeg provide warmth. A subtle pine note emerges as it sits on the tongue.

Finish: Long and warming, with lingering sweetness. The herbal flavors persist, accompanied by a gentle spice heat. A slight bitterness balances the sweetness, reminiscent of orange peel. The finish leaves a pleasant, aromatic sensation in the mouth, inviting another sip.

Bénédictine D.O.M. Liqueur is crafted using a secret blend of 27 herbs and spices, including angelica, hyssop, and lemon balm, which are carefully macerated, distilled, and aged in oak barrels. What's fascinating about its production is that only three people in the world know the full recipe, and each person memorizes only one-third of it to protect the centuries-old formula.

  • Bénédictine's secret recipe allegedly contains 27 herbs and spices, but only three people in the world know the full formula at any given time. These "guardians of the recipe" are sworn to secrecy and never travel together to protect the liqueur's mystery.
  • During World War II, the Bénédictine Palace in Fécamp was occupied by German forces who attempted to recreate the liqueur's recipe. Their efforts failed, but they inadvertently created a new drink called "Benediktin," which is still produced in East Germany today.
  • Bénédictine has an unexpected connection to Singapore: it's a key ingredient in the "Singapore Sling," invented at the Raffles Hotel in 1915. This tropical cocktail helped popularize Bénédictine in Asia, where it remains a staple in many bars today.

      Something to sip? Wonderful.

Excellent to have a bottle available, as you never know when you, or a guest, would like a sip. Usually it is considered an aperitif. But it is pleasing to enjoy after a meal too.

      Great stuff

I searched low and high for this! Not easy to find. I bought this for a cocktail and it was worth the search. Adds a complexity and layer of flavor that’s indescribable.
