Laphroaig 10 Year Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a Scotch Whisky from the Laphroaig Scotch brand crafted in Scotland.

Laphroaig 10 Year Single Malt Scotch Whisky is renowned for its intensely peaty, smoky flavor profile that's often described as medicinal or iodine-like. This distinctive taste comes from the distillery's use of hand-cut peat to dry malted barley, a process that infuses the whisky with the essence of Islay's rugged coastal terrain. Interestingly, during Prohibition in the United States, Laphroaig was one of the few whiskies that could be legally imported, as it was classified as a medicinal spirit due to its strong, antiseptic-like qualities.

Why We Love It

Laphroaig 10 Year Single Malt Scotch Whisky offers cocktail enthusiasts a bold, peaty flavor profile that's unmistakably Islay. Its intense smokiness, derived from peat-dried malted barley and the use of spring water from the Kilbride Stream, combines with notes of seaweed and a subtle sweetness to create a complex spirit that adds depth and character to cocktails, making it a favorite among those who appreciate a truly distinctive Scotch experience.

How to Drink It

Laphroaig 10 Year is best savored neat or with a splash of water to unlock its complex flavors, though it can also shine in smoky variations of classic whisky cocktails. This bold Islay scotch is perfect for sipping on cool autumn evenings, preferably alongside rich, savory dishes like grilled steak, smoked salmon, or strong blue cheeses that can stand up to its intense peaty character.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Strong peat smoke dominates, reminiscent of a seaside bonfire. Medicinal iodine notes and seaweed emerge, followed by hints of sweet barley and citrus. A touch of vanilla and spice rounds out the aroma.

Palate: Intense smokiness hits first, bringing flavors of charred wood and ash. Salty brine and seaweed notes follow, balanced by a surprising sweetness. Lemon zest, malted barley, and a hint of nuttiness develop. Oily texture coats the mouth.

Finish: Long and warming. The smoke lingers, accompanied by sea salt and a subtle sweetness. Medicinal notes resurface, along with a slight pepperiness. Leaves a lasting impression of peat and brine on the palate.

How It's Made

Laphroaig 10 Year is crafted using malted barley that's dried over a peat fire, imparting its signature smoky flavor. The whisky is then distilled in copper pot stills and aged for a decade in oak barrels, allowing the spirit to develop its complex character while retaining the bold, medicinal notes that Islay whiskies are known for.

Fun Facts

  • Laphroaig 10 Year is so beloved by fans that the distillery offers a loyalty program called "Friends of Laphroaig," where members can claim a small plot of land on Islay and collect "rent" in the form of a dram when they visit.
  • During Prohibition, Laphroaig was one of the few whiskies legally imported into the United States, as it was classified as a medicine due to its intense, peaty flavor.
  • The water used to make Laphroaig comes from the Kilbride Stream, which flows over beds of peat before reaching the distillery. This natural filtration contributes to the whisky's unique flavor profile even before the malting process begins.

    Tasty 😋

Got this Scotch for my dad as birthday gift. He opened it right away and gave a snort (his version of a sample) to everyone that wanted to try. It had a very smokey smell and taste to it (i loved it) which my dad enjoyed. I would say that it might be off putting for whiskey/some scotch drinkers due to the smoke intensity. I can see buying this again.
