About Lot 40 Canadian Rye
Embrace the rich, bold taste of Lot 40 Canadian Rye, an award-winning rye whisky that showcases the distinct character of Canadian spirits. Ideal for sipping neat or mixing into your favorite cocktails, Lot 40 Canadian Rye is the perfect addition to any whisky enthusiast's collection.
Lot 40 Canadian Rye is produced by Hiram Walker & Sons, a distillery with a rich history dating back to 1858. The name "Lot 40" pays homage to the original plot of land where the distillery's founder, Joshua Booth, first began distilling rye whisky.
Lot 40 Canadian Rye boasts a deep, amber hue, with a nose that reveals a complex bouquet of caramel, spice, and toasted oak. On the palate, you'll encounter bold flavors of rye spice, black pepper, and cinnamon, complemented by undertones of vanilla and toffee. The finish is long and warming, with a lingering spiciness that leaves you craving another sip.
Cocktail Recommendation: Craft a classic Canadian Old Fashioned:
- 2 oz Lot 40 Canadian Rye
- 1/2 oz maple syrup
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- Orange peel
Combine Lot 40 Canadian Rye, maple syrup, and bitters in a mixing glass with ice. Stir well and strain into a rocks glass filled with a large ice cube. Express the orange peel over the glass and drop it in. Savor the rich, bold flavors of this Canadian twist on a classic cocktail.
Lot 40 Canadian Rye is distilled in a traditional copper pot still using 100% rye grain, including a portion of malted rye. The spirit is aged in new, charred American oak barrels, which imparts a rich, bold flavor and contributes to its unique, spicy character.
Recommended by: Hailey Pasemko, Sother Teague, and Grant Sceney and selected as a recommended spirit to pair with Shaker & Spoon’s Ryes and Fall Box.
“Lot 40 is a great example of Canadian rye whisky. It is made from 100% Canadian rye distilled in a copper pot still and aged in new oak. The vanilla flavors from the oak are well integrated and balanced by the spiciness of the rye grain. The mid palate has hints of dried cherry, orange, and golden raisin, which leads into a warm, building finish of black pepper spice that dances on the palate. This is a great whisky for cocktailing with. It is able to stand up to big flavors without being overpowering!” raves Hailey Pasemko.
“Lot 40 is a Canadian rye distilled the old-fashioned way, in a traditional copper pot still one batch at a time, at the Hiram Walker distillery just across the river from Detroit in Ontario. Its high-rye mash bill results in light notes of pumpernickel on the nose as well as cinnamon and molasses. The palate touches on those as well as offering up gingersnap and black pepper with a decided char. It’s a delicious and fairly priced whiskey that blends beautifully in any cocktail!” says Sother Teague.
As bartender Grant Sceney says, “When it comes to making cocktails with Canadian rye whisky, Lot 40 is one of the best tools in your arsenal. It’s delicious, versatile, and well-balanced—a lovely expression that can be enjoyed alone as a sipper and works very well in both stirred down cocktails and refreshing shaken drinks. It’s made from 100% rye in a copper still, and blended by master blender Dr. Don Livermore.”
Overall, Lot 40 Canadian Rye invites you to indulge in the bold, spicy flavors of a true Canadian classic. Perfect for sipping neat or mixing into your favorite cocktails, this award-winning whisky is a must-have for any connoisseur. I do prefer rye to bourbon in cocktails. Old Fashioned is my go-to with demerara syrup for the sugar content. This rye is stellar. Some folks complain about the bite of Canadian rye but I find Lot 40 very smooth with an elegant taste and it's just fantastic in a cocktail.Best ForRated -2.0 on a scale of minus 2 to 2

I got this because it was the recommended option for my Shaker & Spoon box. I am not much of a brown liquor drinker and I loved this! My husband, who enjoys his brown liquor, enjoyed it as well. Highly recommend.Best ForRated 0.0 on a scale of minus 2 to 2
