Lot 40 Canadian Rye is a Whiskey hailing from Canada.

What is Lot 40 Canadian Rye?

Lot 40 Canadian Rye stands out as a bold, spicy expression that challenges the stereotype of Canadian whisky being light and mellow. This 100% rye whisky is distilled in a copper pot still, a method more commonly associated with Scotch production, which imparts a rich, complex character to the spirit. Interestingly, the name "Lot 40" isn't a marketing gimmick but refers to the plot of land in Ontario where the Corby family, pioneers of Canadian whisky, first settled and began distilling in the 1830s. This historical connection adds a layer of authenticity to every sip.

Why do we love Lot 40 Canadian Rye?

Lot 40 Canadian Rye stands out for its bold, spicy flavor profile and its adherence to traditional rye whisky production methods. This 100% rye whisky is pot-distilled in small batches and aged in new oak barrels, resulting in a rich, complex spirit that showcases the true character of rye grain and offers cocktail enthusiasts a robust foundation for classic and contemporary drinks alike.

How do you drink Lot 40 Canadian Rye?

Lot 40 Canadian Rye shines when sipped neat or with a splash of cool water to open up its bold flavors, but it also makes an excellent base for spirit-forward cocktails like Manhattans or Old Fashioneds. Its warming spice notes make it particularly enjoyable on crisp autumn evenings, paired with hearty dishes like roasted game meats or rich, aged cheeses that complement its robust character.

Nose: Spicy rye grain, fresh-baked rye bread, and warm cinnamon. Hints of vanilla, caramel, and oak. Subtle notes of green apple and dried fruit.

Palate: Bold rye spice upfront, followed by rich caramel and toffee sweetness. Flavors of toasted oak, black pepper, and clove. Underlying notes of dark chocolate and dried cherries. Full-bodied with a creamy texture.

Finish: Long and warming. The rye spice lingers, accompanied by oak tannins and a touch of honey. Fades with subtle hints of mint and licorice.

Lot 40 Canadian Rye is crafted using a unique 100% rye mash bill, including both malted and unmalted rye grains, which are fermented and distilled in small batches using a single copper pot still. This labor-intensive process, combined with aging in new, charred oak barrels, results in a bold, spicy whisky that showcases the true character of rye grain and stands out from many other Canadian whiskies that often blend in other grains or neutral spirits.

  • Lot 40 Canadian Rye is made using a rare 100% rye mashbill, including both malted and unmalted rye grains. This unconventional approach creates a spicier, more robust flavor profile than typical Canadian whiskies, which often blend in other grains.
  • The name "Lot 40" pays homage to the plot of land where distiller Joshua Booth, the great-great-grandfather of the whisky's modern creator, first set up his distillery in Ontario in the 1830s. This historic connection ties the modern spirit directly to Canada's early whisky-making traditions.
  • Unlike most Canadian whiskies, Lot 40 is distilled in a single copper pot still, a method more commonly associated with Scotch whisky production. This process retains more of the rye's natural oils and flavors, resulting in a uniquely rich and complex spirit that stands out in the Canadian whisky landscape.

Really enjoyable Rye, smooth, no bite

I do prefer rye to bourbon in cocktails. Old Fashioned is my go-to with demerara syrup for the sugar content. This rye is stellar. Some folks complain about the bite of Canadian rye but I find Lot 40 very smooth with an elegant taste and it's just fantastic in a cocktail.

      I am a convert

I got this because it was the recommended option for my Shaker & Spoon box. I am not much of a brown liquor drinker and I loved this! My husband, who enjoys his brown liquor, enjoyed it as well. Highly recommend.

      New to Me Surprise

Grabbed a bottle of this as a recommendation from a Shaker and Spoon subscription box. Worked great in the cocktails, but stands alone on ice. Smooth.
