Ferrand Original Formula 1840 Cognac is part of our Cognac collection. It comes from Ferrand and is crafted in France.
Ferrand 1840 Original Formula is a Grande Champagne Cognac specifically designed for classic cocktail mixing. Created by Master Blender Alexandre Gabriel in collaboration with cocktail historian David Wondrich, this expression replicates the robust three star Cognac style popular during the golden age of mixology in the nineteenth century.
It is built entirely for mixology. Bottled at a higher 45% ABV (90 proof), it offers a bolder flavor profile that stands up perfectly against other cocktail ingredients. It brings historical accuracy to classic drinks while delivering vibrant floral and fresh fruit notes.
This is the ultimate cocktail Cognac. Its best application is acting as the base spirit in traditional nineteenth century drinks like the Sazerac, the Mint Julep, or the Brandy Crusta. Its higher proof also makes it an excellent choice for a vibrant French 75.
Nose: Fresh and floral with bright aromas of ripe grape, meadow flowers, acacia blossom, and a hint of cedar.
Palate: Warm and fruit forward. Sweet notes of baked apple and honey blend with subtle baking spices and vanilla.
Finish: Clean and lingering, leaving traces of warm spice, honey, and floral vineyard blossoms.
It is crafted exclusively from Ugni Blanc grapes grown in the prestigious Grande Champagne cru. The wine is double distilled on the lees in traditional Charentais copper pot stills to maximize aromatic depth. The spirit is then aged in French oak barrels to achieve a youthful and punchy profile ideal for mixing.

View RecipesThis is the perfect cognac for mixing. It is not too strong a flavor to dominate a drink, but not too thin to be lost either.
Really good stuff for mixing drinks. I’m not a supper of brandy so I can’t really speak to how this is neat, but it’s phenomenal in a Sidecar or Vieux Carré.
I'm not a big Cognac/brandy fan, but need a bottle around now and then. I've heard others say this is pretty good. Seems sweeter tasting than the Remmie Martin 1738 also have. Honestly, I think I like a bit sweeter profile of the PF, so that's good.
