Appleton Estate Rare Casks 12 Year Reserve is a Dark Rum from the Appleton Estate Rums brand crafted in Jamaica.

Appleton Estate Rare Casks 12 Year Reserve is a rich and complex Jamaican rum that showcases the artistry of master blender Joy Spence, the first woman to hold this position in the spirits industry. Interestingly, each bottle contains rum aged for at least 12 years, with some barrels in the blend dating back several decades, contributing to its deep flavor profile and smooth finish.

Why We Love It

Appleton Estate Rare Casks 12 Year Reserve stands out for its unique blend of pot and column-still rums, all aged for a minimum of 12 years in Jamaica's tropical climate. This rum showcases the distillery's signature "orange peel" note, a result of their proprietary fermentation process using wild yeasts native to the Cockpit Country region, creating a complex flavor profile that's distinctly Jamaican yet refined enough for sipping neat or elevating classic cocktails.

How to Drink It

Appleton Estate Rare Casks 12 Year Reserve shines when sipped neat or with a single large ice cube, allowing its complex flavors to unfold gradually on the palate. This versatile rum also excels in spirit-forward cocktails that showcase its rich character, and pairs beautifully with dark chocolate desserts or spicy jerk chicken, making it an ideal choice for cozy autumn evenings or festive tropical gatherings alike.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Orange peel, brown sugar, and nutmeg jump out first. Deeper sniffs reveal oak, vanilla, and a hint of coffee. There's a subtle aroma of tropical fruits like mango and banana.

Palate: Rich and full-bodied. Molasses and baking spices dominate initially. Notes of toasted nuts, dried apricots, and cocoa follow. A slight peppery heat builds, balanced by caramel sweetness. The oak influence is present but not overpowering.

Finish: Long and warming. The spice lingers, accompanied by dark chocolate and a touch of tobacco. Faint notes of tropical fruit resurface, leaving a pleasant sweetness. The oak provides a dry, tannic quality that invites another sip.

How It's Made

Appleton Estate Rare Casks 12 Year Reserve is crafted using a blend of rums aged for at least 12 years in oak barrels, with some components aged up to 18 years. What sets this rum apart is Appleton's use of their proprietary cultured yeast strain and the incorporation of "rare casks" - specially selected barrels that impart unique flavors and complexity to the final product.

Fun Facts

  • Appleton Estate's Rare Casks 12 Year Reserve contains rum aged in a special "rare cask" that once held Spanish oloroso sherry, imparting unique flavors not found in other Jamaican rums.
  • The blend includes rum from a legendary barrel dating back to 1790, making it one of the oldest continuously used rum barrels in the world.
  • Appleton Estate uses a proprietary strain of yeast for fermentation that's been cultivated on-site for over 200 years, contributing to the rum's distinct flavor profile.

    Good but not superb

I like this rum. It makes a nice old fashioned and is a good mixing and sipping rum. BUT...it is not that much better than the "signature" variety. My family did a blind 12 rum taste test and the signature, mount gay, plantation 5 year, and Hamilton 86 all scored higher (for what that was worth). I also prefer the foursquare Prohabitas and Copalli white over this for mixing.

Not a bad rum at all, just other options that are better.
