Coruba Dark Jamaican Rum is a Dark Rum  crafted in Jamaica.

Coruba Dark Jamaican Rum stands out for its rich, molasses-forward flavor profile and its versatility in classic tiki cocktails. Interestingly, despite its popularity in cocktail circles, Coruba was originally created in 1889 as a mixing rum for the British Navy, and it wasn't until the mid-20th century that it found its way into the hands of bartenders and became a staple in tropical drinks.

Why We Love It

Cocktail enthusiasts should take note of Coruba Dark Jamaican Rum for its rich, molasses-forward profile and distinctive pot-still character. This full-bodied rum stands out with its robust flavors of tropical fruit, warm spices, and a subtle smokiness, making it an excellent choice for classic tiki drinks and modern rum-based cocktails alike.

How to Drink It

Coruba Dark Jamaican Rum shines in tropical-inspired cocktails and tiki drinks, where its rich molasses and spice notes add depth and complexity. While it's robust enough to sip neat or on the rocks, this rum truly comes alive in warm weather, pairing wonderfully with grilled meats, tropical fruits, and spicy Caribbean cuisine.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Rich molasses and burnt sugar dominate, backed by vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Ripe banana and overripe mango add tropical fruit notes. A hint of oak and leather rounds out the aroma.

Palate: Thick and oily texture. Dark brown sugar and blackstrap molasses hit first, followed by baking spices like clove and allspice. Dried fruit flavors of raisin and prune emerge. Toasted oak and a slight medicinal quality add complexity.

Finish: Long and warming. The molasses sweetness lingers, accompanied by black pepper spice and a touch of coffee. Subtle smoky notes and a pleasant astringency from the oak tannins provide balance.

How It's Made

Coruba Dark Jamaican Rum is crafted using a blend of pot-still and column-still rums, aged for at least two years in charred oak barrels. What sets it apart is the use of dunder pits during fermentation, where leftover stillage from previous distillations is added to the fermenting molasses, creating a unique flavor profile with funky, fruity notes characteristic of Jamaican rums.

Fun Facts

  • Coruba Dark Jamaican Rum was originally created in 1889 specifically for British Navy sailors, who received a daily ration of rum as part of their compensation. The high alcohol content and rich flavor were designed to withstand long sea voyages without spoiling.
  • Despite its name and Jamaican heritage, Coruba is actually produced and bottled in New Zealand. The rum is shipped in bulk from Jamaica to the Southern Hemisphere, where it's blended and bottled, creating a unique cross-cultural spirits journey.
  • Coruba has a secret weapon in cocktails: it contains a higher percentage of dunder (the leftover residue from previous rum distillations) than most rums. This gives it an intensely funky flavor that bartenders love for adding depth to tiki drinks like the Zombie and Mai Tai.

    Lives up to its reputation

Many recipes call for this rum by name, in spite of may people noting how it is not a great sipping experience. I just got my first bottle and I can attest to three things: It has a great nose—just like what you'd hope for a "dark Jamaican rum"—a little burnt sugar, a little molasses. It for sure is not a sipper, though it's not horrible or anything, just a good ingredient you don't want to consume on its own! Finally, it really works in the drinks I've used it in, as in the pictured Jungle Bird.
