Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin is a Gin hailing from Ireland.

What is Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin?

Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin stands out with its unique blend of botanicals, including gunpowder tea, which lends a distinctive smoky-sweet flavor profile. Interestingly, the gin's creator, PJ Rigney, was inspired to include gunpowder tea after observing Chinese tea shop owners carefully weighing it on brass scales, reminiscent of the meticulous process of crafting gin.

Why do we love Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin?

Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin stands out for its unique blend of traditional Irish botanicals and exotic Asian ingredients, including the namesake gunpowder tea. This small-batch gin is slow-distilled by hand in medieval copper pot stills, resulting in a bold, spicy flavor profile with citrusy notes that's unlike any other gin on the market.

How do you drink Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin?

Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin shines in refreshing citrus-forward cocktails, particularly those with a hint of spice to complement its unique botanicals. While it's bold enough to sip neat or on the rocks, this gin truly comes alive in warmer months, making it perfect for outdoor gatherings or seaside dinners where its crisp flavors pair beautifully with light, fresh seafood dishes or zesty Asian-inspired cuisines.

Nose: Fresh citrus notes of grapefruit and lemon peel, followed by juniper and subtle floral hints. A spicy undercurrent of cardamom and coriander emerges, with a slight vegetal touch from the gunpowder tea.

Palate: Smooth and well-balanced. Juniper takes the lead, accompanied by zesty citrus and a peppery kick. The gunpowder tea adds a unique grassy and slightly smoky character. Notes of angelica root and orris provide an earthy backdrop.

Finish: Long and warming. The spices linger, particularly cardamom and star anise. A gentle sweetness from meadowsweet balances the dry, tea-like tannins. The finish concludes with a crisp, clean aftertaste that invites another sip.

Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin is crafted using a unique blend of botanicals, including gunpowder tea, which are individually distilled in medieval copper pot stills. The gin's distinctive character comes from the slow vapor infusion process, where the botanicals are suspended in a basket above the still, allowing their flavors to be gently extracted by the rising vapors of the spirit.

  • Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin includes Gunpowder tea as a botanical, which isn't actually gunpowder but a type of green tea rolled into tiny pellets resembling old-fashioned gunpowder.
  • The gin is made in a shed (known as "The Shed") in rural Drumshanbo, Ireland, using a medieval copper pot still named "Méabh" after a legendary Irish warrior queen.
  • Each bottle of Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin features a blue-eyed jackalope (a mythical animal that's part jackrabbit, part antelope) on its label, inspired by a stuffed jackalope the distiller saw in a Texas bar.
  • Main Ingredient: Juniper Berries
    Country of Origin: Ireland

      I drink it neat

I love this Gin. While I would normally drink gin as a G&T, I have enjoyed this gin on the rocks. I love the flavor profile.

      One of my favorites

This is a fantastic gin and one of my favorites. I was introduced to it by a previous boyfriend's father. His father, originally from Ireland, asks his older children, who still living in Ireland, to bring it to him whenever they come to visit the UK. It is perfect with a grapefruit slice in a G&T. A lime just doesn't do justice to this herbal, rounded, botanical mix. It is perfect by itself and gives depth of flavor to a tonic. Don't water it down with too much ice, just enough to make it cold. We always do a large square cocktail ice cube in a low-ball glass, about 2/3 tonic or a little less to 1/3 gin, with a wedge of squeezed grapefruit. Perfect!
