Marie Brizard Orange Curaçao is a Curacao hailing from France.

What is Marie Brizard Orange Curaçao?

Marie Brizard Orange Curaçao stands out for its rich history and refined flavor profile, blending bitter orange peels with a secret mix of spices and herbs. Interestingly, the company's founder, Marie Brizard herself, was one of the first female distillers in France, breaking barriers in the 18th-century spirits industry when she started the business in 1755.

Why do we love Marie Brizard Orange Curaçao?

Marie Brizard Orange Curaçao stands out for its use of Lahara oranges from the island of Curaçao, which are blended with sweet and bitter orange peels for a complex, authentic flavor. Unlike many mass-produced orange liqueurs, Marie Brizard employs a traditional maceration process that extracts essential oils from the peels, resulting in a vibrant, natural orange taste that shines in classic cocktails like the Sidecar and Mai Tai.

How do you drink Marie Brizard Orange Curaçao?

Marie Brizard Orange Curaçao shines as a versatile liqueur, adding a sweet orange essence to tropical and citrus-forward cocktails. It's delightful served neat or on the rocks during warm summer evenings, and pairs wonderfully with desserts featuring citrus or chocolate notes.

Nose: Sweet orange zest dominates, backed by subtle hints of bitter orange peel. A light vanilla note emerges, reminiscent of orange-flavored hard candy. Faint alcohol vapors are present but not overpowering.

Palate: Smooth and syrupy texture coats the tongue. Initial burst of candied orange peel gives way to a more complex blend of citrus flavors. Bitter orange notes balance the sweetness, while subtle spice hints add depth. A mild alcohol warmth develops mid-palate.

Finish: Medium-length finish with lingering orange essence. The sweetness fades, leaving a pleasant bittersweet orange peel flavor. Slight warmth persists, accompanied by a faint vanilla aftertaste. Clean and refreshing, inviting another sip.

Marie Brizard Orange Curaçao is crafted by macerating the dried peels of bitter Laraha oranges from Curaçao in a neutral spirit, then blending this infusion with sugar and additional flavoring agents. What's intriguing about the process is the use of Laraha oranges, a unique variety descended from Valencia oranges that adapted to Curaçao's arid climate, developing a distinctively fragrant, bitter peel that gives the liqueur its characteristic flavor.

  • Marie Brizard Orange Curaçao was once used as a secret ingredient in the original recipe for Coca-Cola. In the late 19th century, pharmacist John Pemberton included small amounts of the liqueur to enhance the complex flavor profile of his new soft drink.
  • During World War II, the Marie Brizard distillery in Bordeaux was commandeered by the German army. However, clever workers managed to hide a significant portion of their Orange Curaçao stock behind false walls, preserving it for liberation celebrations in 1944.
  • The vibrant blue color of Marie Brizard Orange Curaçao isn't just for show – it's a nod to the company's nautical history. The hue was chosen to match the azure waters of the Caribbean, where the bitter oranges used in production are sourced.

perfect for a margarita with mezcal

it is perfect for cocktails in which you want to use an orange liqueur that is not so dry so you have a unique sweetness that is difficult to match with simple syrup.

      Useful for tiki time

When I've needed Orange Curacao for a tiki drink, I've usually just substituted with Dry or gone with Cointreau instead. But sometimes you need to get the real thing. The Marie Brizard has a bright, fruity taste that blends well in a summery beverage. Certainly not an everyday drink but a useful addition to the back shelf.
