Plymouth Gin is a Gin from the Plymouth Gin brand hailing from England.

What is Plymouth Gin?

Plymouth Gin stands out as the only gin with a protected geographical indication, meaning it can only be produced in Plymouth, England. Interestingly, during World War II, the distillery where Plymouth Gin is made was the only building left standing in its street after the Plymouth Blitz, leading some to jokingly refer to it as "the liquid that won the war."

Why do we love Plymouth Gin?

Plymouth Gin stands out for its smooth, balanced flavor profile and protected geographical indication status, making it the only gin that must be produced in Plymouth, England. With its unique blend of seven botanicals, including juniper berries, coriander seeds, and angelica root, Plymouth Gin offers a less juniper-forward taste compared to London Dry gins, making it exceptionally versatile in cocktails and a favorite among bartenders since the 19th century.

How do you drink Plymouth Gin?

Plymouth Gin shines in crisp, refreshing cocktails that let its smooth, balanced flavor profile take center stage, making it perfect for warm summer evenings or seaside sipping. Its gentle botanicals and subtle citrus notes pair beautifully with seafood dishes, particularly shellfish, and it's equally enjoyable served simply over ice with a twist of lemon for those who prefer to savor its nuanced character.

Nose: Juniper forward with earthy undertones. Notes of coriander and cardamom provide a spicy warmth. Subtle citrus peel and angelica root add brightness and depth.

Palate: Smooth and creamy texture. Juniper remains prominent, balanced by a blend of seven botanicals. Orris root lends a subtle floral quality. Hints of lemon zest and green apple bring crispness. Warming spices like cinnamon and black pepper emerge.

Finish: Medium-long and dry. Lingering juniper and citrus notes fade to reveal a gentle earthiness. Slight peppery warmth on the back of the throat. Clean and refreshing aftertaste with a touch of licorice root.

Plymouth Gin is crafted using a unique blend of seven botanicals, including juniper berries, coriander seeds, and angelica root, which are steeped in pure grain spirit and water from Dartmoor National Park before being distilled in a 170-year-old copper still. What sets Plymouth apart is its use of 'single shot' distillation, where the spirit is only distilled once, resulting in a smoother, more full-bodied gin with a subtle earthiness that's become its hallmark.

  • During World War II, Plymouth Gin's distillery was bombed in the Plymouth Blitz. Despite severe damage, the staff managed to save a batch of gin that was aging in the cellars, which later became known as the "Bomber Strength" gin.
  • Plymouth Gin was the preferred gin of the British Royal Navy for over two centuries. It was an essential ingredient in their daily ration of "Pink Gin," a mixture of Plymouth Gin and Angostura bitters believed to combat seasickness and malaria.
