Rhum Clément V.O is a Rhum Agricole from the Clement Rhum brand crafted in France.

It's distilled from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice and proudly wears the A.O.C. Martinique designation. Aged for three years alternating between ex-Bourbon barrels and new American oak casks. Clement V.O is France's top selling aged rhum.

Why We Love It

This is a high quality Rhum Agricole made by a great producer. It's respected around the world and newly available in the U.S. For Rhum Agricole lovers it's a must try. For everyone else, Rhum Clément V.O would be an excellent choice to make a spirit-forward sipper like a Rum Old Fashioned or El Presidente and for crafting a traditional Ti' Punch Vieux.

How to Drink It

Rhum Clément V.O shines when sipped neat or over a large ice cube, letting those vanilla and coconut notes dance across your palate, though it also brings sophisticated depth to rum old-fashioneds and other spirit-forward cocktails. Its lighter body and delicate almond finish make it especially appealing during warmer months on a breezy patio, and it pairs beautifully with grilled seafood, tropical fruit desserts, or aged cheeses that echo its subtle oak character.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Bright vanilla and fresh coconut greet you first, followed by baking spices like cinnamon and nutmeg.

Palate: Light and approachable with a smooth, almost creamy texture. Vanilla takes center stage alongside caramel and coconut.

Finish: Medium length with warming oak spice and lingering almond.

How It's Made

Rhum Clément V.O is distilled from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice (rather than molasses) in the agricole style and aged for three years in Martinique's tropical climate, alternating between ex-bourbon barrels and new American oak casks—a back-and-forth method that builds complexity while maintaining the grassy, vegetal character that makes agricole rhum so distinctive from its molasses-based Caribbean cousins.

Fun Facts

  • Rhum Clément is made at Habitation Clément, a former sugar plantation in Martinique where Homère Clément pivoted from making sugar to distilling rum in 1887—and the estate's 18th-century Creole mansion later became the historic site where Presidents George H.W. Bush and François Mitterrand met in 1991 to discuss the first Gulf War, making it one of the few distilleries to host international diplomacy.
  • Unlike most aged rums that spend their entire maturation in one type of barrel, Clément V.O alternates between ex-bourbon barrels and virgin American oak casks during its three-year aging process, a technique that layers flavors progressively—the ex-bourbon barrels impart vanilla and caramel while the new oak adds structured tannins and spice, creating a more complex profile than single-barrel aging could achieve.
  • Martinique is the only place in the world where rum carries an AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) designation—the same protected status given to Champagne and Cognac—and Clément V.O must follow strict regulations including using only Martinique-grown sugarcane, fresh-pressed juice (not molasses), and column still distillation, making it more similar to a fine French spirit than Caribbean rum in terms of legal protection and production standards.

Light & Fruity, Smooth & Delicious

While my experiences with French agricoles are limited to a few bottles of unaged and longer aged bottles of Clement and Pere Labat, I have had dozens of other fresh sugar cane distillates and was eager to try another offering from Rhum Clement. They were my first French rhum bottles I ever tried, specifically their Blanc and VSOP, which I found to be very earthy and grassy, and with the VSOP in particular, heavy on notes of tobacco. Not a bad thing, just not really my preference.

So imagine my surprise when trying this bottle and having to double check if this was really an agricole. It's like they captured fresh fruit and new woody growth in a bottle, almost completely absent of grass, clay, heavy wood, or tobacco. This rum is so fresh and light I could regularly drink it straight, sans ice.

Nose: Light, Sweet, Fruity, a background of fresh oak. Very Pleasant and inviting.

Palate: Thin on the tongue, a lot stronger oak flavor, but not too deep, still a very young wood taste, which comes on sudden and immediate but followed almost as quickly by sweet, crisp fruity notes, like a sweet green apple.

Finish: Medium length. The first sip was hot, but the second sip was nothing but pure sweetness of the fruit flavors.

This is a wonderfully delicious rum that I feel would be very good for beginners getting into rum to try and for everyone else to savor. I highly recommend this bottle for everybody.
