Amaro di Angostura Liqueur is a Amaro from the Angostura Bitters brand crafted in Venezuela.

Amaro di Angostura Liqueur blends the iconic Angostura bitters with neutral spirits, creating a complex and bittersweet digestif that's both familiar and novel. Interestingly, despite its Italian-sounding name, this amaro is actually produced in Trinidad and Tobago, making it a unique Caribbean twist on the traditionally European liqueur category.

Why We Love It

Amaro di Angostura Liqueur offers cocktail enthusiasts a distinctive twist on the bitter liqueur category, blending the iconic Angostura aromatic bitters with neutral spirits, spices, and herbs. Unlike traditional amari from Italy, this Trinidad and Tobago-made liqueur showcases the unmistakable flavors of Angostura bitters in a more approachable, mixable format, making it a versatile ingredient for both classic and contemporary cocktails.

How to Drink It

Amaro di Angostura Liqueur shines when sipped neat or over ice, allowing its complex blend of herbs, spices, and bitters to unfold on the palate. It's also a versatile mixer in spirit-forward cocktails, particularly those with aged spirits, and makes for a delightful digestif after hearty meals or during cooler months, pairing exceptionally well with rich, savory dishes or dark chocolate desserts.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Rich spices dominate, with cinnamon and clove at the forefront. Hints of cocoa, dried orange peel, and licorice root add complexity. A subtle vanilla note softens the intense aromatics.

Palate: Bold and bittersweet. Dark chocolate and coffee flavors mingle with warming spices like nutmeg and allspice. Herbal notes of gentian and cardamom emerge, balanced by caramel sweetness. The signature Angostura bitters profile is present but not overpowering.

Finish: Long and pleasantly bitter. Cocoa and coffee linger, accompanied by a gentle warmth from the spices. A slight medicinal quality reminiscent of root beer provides an interesting twist. The bitterness builds gradually, leaving a dry, appetizing sensation that invites another sip.

How It's Made

Amaro di Angostura Liqueur is crafted using the same aromatic bitters that give the classic Angostura product its distinctive flavor, but with additional herbs and spices. The exact recipe is a closely guarded secret, but we know it involves a careful blend of Caribbean rum, neutral spirits, and a proprietary mix of botanicals that are steeped and then distilled to create this unique Italian-style amaro.

Fun Facts

  • Amaro di Angostura Liqueur is actually made with the exact same secret blend of herbs and spices as Angostura bitters, but in much higher concentrations. This means you're essentially sipping on a supercharged version of those iconic bitters!
  • Despite its Italian-sounding name, Amaro di Angostura is produced in Trinidad and Tobago, making it one of the few tropical amari in the world. It combines Caribbean rum-making traditions with the European bitter liqueur style.
  • The recipe for Amaro di Angostura was developed in the 1940s, but it wasn't released to the public until 2014. For over 70 years, this spirit was a closely guarded secret, enjoyed only by the company's employees and their families.

    Amazing liquer! 100% reccommend

I got this liqueur to make a singular cocktail from How to Drink's channel (Skyrim drink video) but I had a ton left over so started experimenting with it and eventually added it to an old fashioned... completely changed the game, made it unbelievably silky smooth and delicious and has become the staple, "secret" ingredient in my old fashioned's and everyone who has one says its the best old fashioned they've ever had and I attribute it to the amaro di angostura. 11/10 would recommend

    If you like Angostura Bitters...

...this stuff is great! My primary use is as an alternative to Averna in a Black Manhattan, and it works beautifully.

Phenomenal, but I don't see many places where this is necessary over ango bitters

I love it. 2oz in a glass with seltzer, you have literally a christmas flavored cola. Very allspice forward.

But if you're on the fence about this or another amaro and you already have angostura bitters at home, get the other amaro - the angostura bitters alone will bring all the same flavors in almost every situation.

So, great, but almost a little redundant.
