• Smith & Cross rum is bottled at a potent 57% ABV, known as "navy strength." This high proof dates back to the 18th century when the British Royal Navy would test rum by soaking gunpowder in it - if the powder still ignited, the rum was "proof" it hadn't been watered down.
• Despite its bold flavor profile, Smith & Cross is actually a blend of only two distinct styles of Jamaican rum: Plummer and Wedderburn. These are named after 19th-century British merchants and represent different levels of fermentation time, creating a complex flavor spectrum from just two components.
• The rum's distinct funkiness comes from a process called "dunder pit fermentation." Distillers add a portion of spent stillage from previous batches to new fermentations, introducing wild yeasts and bacteria.
