The Oaxapricot Old Fashioned is rich, smoky, and layered with stone fruit and spice, it takes the classic Old Fashioned structure and reroutes it through agave country. The result is delicious.
At the center: Lost Explorer Reposado Tequila, a new reposado from 2025's IWSC Agave Producer of the Year. It brings far more to the glass than simple oak aging. Starting with El Magnifico distillery’s celebrated additive-free blanco, the tequila undergoes a thoughtful triple-cask maturation: French oak Sauternes barrels contribute subtle honeyed fruit and texture, Pedro Ximénez sherry casks from Jerez lend dried fruit richness, and Kentucky bourbon barrels add warmth and soft spice. A reposado to savor: earthy agave still firmly intact, but layered with notes of vanilla, dried fruit, citrus peel, and gentle baking spice.
Paired with Giffard Abricot du Roussillon, this folds in lush apricot flavor that tastes like actual ripe fruit, while a touch of smoky mezcal (double up one of The Lost Explorer's mezcals, to keep it in the family) deepens the drink without overpowering it. Black walnut bitters and Angostura add structure and spice, and a small pinch of salt quietly sharpens every flavor in the glass.
Served over a large cube with expressed lemon oils drifting across the surface, the drink opens slowly as the ice melts. First sip: agave and smoke. Then apricot, citrus peel, walnut, and warm spice begin to unfold.
A distinctive and pleasurable experience.
