Head down to Havana but take a detour through Japan. You've arrived at the Machjito-- somewhere greener, brighter, and a little more interesting. It keeps the expected minty rum backbone but swaps in a few unexpected players that completely change the conversation.
Right away, you’ll notice the layered base. Planteray 3 Star brings that familiar light, slightly funky foundation. But then things shift. Sake steps in with a soft, rice-driven roundness that adds a clean, delicate lift—alongside a touch of fruit, and a refined texture. Next, the departure: Yoshi Matcha Liqueur. It adds notes of gentle bitter green tea and creamy earthiness that plays beautifully with the mint. It doesn’t overpower—it hums underneath, giving the drink a quiet complexity that builds as you sip. A touch of saline sharpens everything, making the citrus pop and the flavors feel more precise.
Topped with soda water, the Machjito stays light and lively, the kind of drink you can settle into without overthinking it. It’s crisp, herbal, slightly savory -- familiar at first glance, but one sip in and you realize it’s playing a different game.
This is a Mojito for when you want something a little less obvious—still refreshing, still easy to love, but with the depth to keep things interesting.
Ingredients
-
1 oz Yoshi Matcha Liqueur
-
1 oz sake
-
1 oz white rum
-
0.5 oz simple syrup
-
1/2 juicy lime, cut into pieces
-
A generous handful of fresh mint, plus more for garnish
-
5 drops saline solution or a pinch of salt
-
Soda water
Directions
Add the lime pieces and saline solution to a glass and muddle until the juices and oils are well expressed.
Add a handful of mint and lightly muddle again to release the aroma without over-bruising the leaves.
Pour in the sake, rum, Yoshi Matcha Liqueur, and simple syrup, then fill the glass with ice. Agitate the drink with a bar spoon to chill and combine the ingredients.
Top with soda water and give it a gentle stir.
Garnish with a lime wedge, a sprig of mint, and a straw before serving.
