Nahmias Mahia Fig Spirit is a Patagonian Spirit  crafted in United States.

Nahmias Mahia Fig Spirit is a unique and flavorful distillate crafted from figs, carrying on a centuries-old Moroccan Jewish tradition. What's particularly intriguing is that it's the first and only commercially available fig spirit produced in the United States, made by a family using techniques passed down through generations.

Why We Love It

Cocktail enthusiasts should seek out Nahmias Mahia Fig Spirit for its unique Moroccan heritage and distinctive flavor profile. Unlike rum, which is made from sugarcane, this small-batch spirit is crafted from sun-dried figs and flavored with anise seed, creating a complex and aromatic base for cocktails that's deeply rooted in North African tradition.

How to Drink It

Nahmias Mahia Fig Spirit shines when sipped neat or on the rocks, allowing its subtle fig and anise notes to unfold on the palate. This versatile spirit also works beautifully in aromatic cocktails, particularly those calling for brandy or rum, and pairs wonderfully with Mediterranean cuisine or as an after-dinner treat on warm summer evenings.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Fresh figs, ripe pear, and a hint of anise greet the senses. Subtle notes of almond and orange blossom add complexity. The aroma is clean and bright, with a gentle warmth from the alcohol.

Palate: Smooth and silky texture. Dried fig flavors dominate, accompanied by light honey sweetness. Hints of cinnamon and nutmeg provide a spicy undertone. The fig taste is natural and not overly sweet, balanced by a slight earthiness reminiscent of the fruit's skin.

Finish: Medium-length finish with lingering fig and a touch of white pepper. The warmth of the spirit becomes more pronounced, leaving a pleasant tingle. A subtle nuttiness emerges at the end, reminiscent of toasted sesame seeds.

How It's Made

Nahmias Mahia Fig Spirit is crafted using a traditional Moroccan recipe that involves fermenting and distilling sun-dried figs. What makes this spirit unique is that it's produced in small batches using a copper alembic still, a method that preserves the delicate fig flavors and aromas throughout the distillation process.

Fun Facts

  • Nahmias Mahia Fig Spirit is the first and only commercially available fig spirit in the United States, reviving a 2,000-year-old Moroccan Jewish tradition that was nearly lost to time.
  • The spirit's creator, David Nahmias, uses his family's secret recipe and hand-selects each California-grown fig, personally inspecting over 6 tons of fruit annually to ensure only the best make it into each bottle.
  • Despite its name, Nahmias Mahia Fig Spirit isn't technically a fig brandy—it's distilled from fermented figs and anise seeds, resulting in a unique, herbaceous flavor profile that's closer to a botanical gin than a traditional fruit brandy.

    Unique and Delicious

I was drawn to this unique spirit by the description on Curiada. I was not disappointed! It has a unique flavor that is definitely fig-forward. But there is much more going on here. It works really well neat or as a flavorful and noteworthy addition to cocktails. Will be buying this one again and again!

    A fig explosion

I've been infusing figs into gin for a couple of years so I could play around fig forward cocktails. My experiments have been successful, but when I saw a fig eau de vie I knew I had to try it. The aroma of figs is incredible when you remove the stopper. No fig infused gin or fig liqueur I've tried comes close. The flavors follow in hand. We've had a lot of fun swapping this in for gin or fig infused gin in some of our favorite cocktails. Really a cool bottle and absolutely a repeat purchase.

Worth the try! One of my new favorites

I just love this bottle! It’s hard to elaborate because I’m just so infatuated with it. If you like figs, even in the slightest, grab this to give it a try. Pair it with some amount of lime juice and seltzer = you’ve got a perfect refreshing spring/summer glass. You cab easily dress this up more if you want too. I just love this stuff!

An absolutely unique gem of a spirit

Wife and I have made 4 or 5 different cocktails with this stuff and that essence of pure figs just shines bright through. It absolutely loves playing with other flavors, particularly fruit juices. The cocktail written on the back of the bottle is an absolute banger. It can go in simple cocktails or complex ones, plays nice with other spirits (replace a half ounce of tequila in your margarita and hang on) and it always seems to be extremely present yet never overpowering.

It's a truly wild drink. Bone dry unsweet, but with a powerful essence of fig on the nose and taste. Not bitter, not like an amaro or aperitif, just FIGS. I don't really love it neat, but I think that's just because it's a hair pricey as a base spirit and I absolutely adore it in cocktails, I think I'm just tricking myself into saving it for those. It doesn't really have the complexity of a barrel aged spirit either, so neat is probably a waste. This stuff does make for an absolutely outrageous old fashioned with two barspoons of simple and four dashes of bitters (I split 2 of ango and 2 of ango orange)

A bottle of this is going in every single future order I make from curiada. Do yourself a favor and give it a try.
