Looking for a Kentucky Derby cocktail to surprise and delight your guests? What to make when Mint Juleps are expected, and bourbon neat doesn't cut it for a special occasion?
Here's something that may do the trick. This riff on the Julep goes far afield, packs some serious horsepower (#dadjoke), and is a perfect way to toast this year's Derby.
After all, the 150th anniversary of "the greatest 2 minutes in sports" deserves a showstopping cocktail.
And the Safari Julep, which boasts Scotch, two rums, and two delicious, flavorful syrups is a sure bet.
(Let's hope we can say the same for your horse!)
Ingredients
-
1.5 oz scotch, like The Famous Grouse
-
.25 oz overproof Demerara rum, like Hamilton 151
-
.25 oz gold rum, like Hamilton Jamaican Pot Still Gold Rum
-
1 teaspoon grenadine, like Liber & Co. Real Grenadine
-
1 teaspoon chai syrup*
-
fresh mint and a curry leaf
Directions
Prepare the chai syrup ahead of time. Let cool to room temperature before using.
Add all the ingredients to a julep cup and fill the cup with crushed ice.
Combine with a swizzle stick.
Garnish with a sprig of mint and a curry leaf.
Recipe Note
*To make chai tea syrup, add equal parts sugar to hot brewed chai tea, heat until all the sugar has dissolved. Allow to cool, strain if desired. Store in a clean, sterilized jar and keep in the refrigerator for up to one month
