Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao is a Curacao from the Pierre Ferrand brand hailing from France.

What is Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao?

Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao is a revival of a 19th-century style orange liqueur, crafted using bitter Curaçao orange peels and cognac as its base spirit. This unique blend results in a less sweet, more complex flavor profile that beautifully complements the Original 1944 Mai Tai Set, allowing the rum's nuances to shine through. Intriguingly, the creator of Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao, Alexandre Gabriel, spent years researching historical recipes and even acquired a 19th-century pot still to recreate the authentic production methods of the era. This dedication to historical accuracy has made it a favorite among cocktail historians and mixologists seeking to recreate classic drinks with period-correct ingredients.

Why do we love Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao?

Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao stands out as a premium orange liqueur crafted using a base of cognac, giving it a depth and complexity that many other curaçaos lack. Its recipe is inspired by a 19th-century French tradition, incorporating bitter orange peels and spices, resulting in a less sweet, more nuanced flavor profile that perfectly complements the other spirits in a Mai Tai without overpowering them.

How do you drink Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao?

Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao and the Original 1944 Mai Tai Set components shine brightest in tropical-inspired cocktails, particularly those featuring complex rum blends and nutty, citrus notes. While these spirits can be savored neat or on the rocks to appreciate their individual nuances, they truly come alive in mixed drinks enjoyed during warm summer evenings or as a refreshing escape on a chilly night, ideally paired with bold, spicy cuisine or fresh seafood dishes that complement their vibrant flavors.

Nose: Bright orange zest and candied peel, followed by subtle vanilla and warm spices. Hints of cognac-like oak and dried fruits emerge.

Palate: Intense orange flavors balanced by cognac's depth. Notes of bitter orange peel, cinnamon, and nutmeg mingle with light caramel and toasted almond. Drier and less syrupy than most orange liqueurs.

Finish: Long and warming with lingering orange oil, gentle spice, and a touch of oak. Slightly bitter, reminiscent of fresh orange pith, leaving a clean, dry sensation that invites another sip.

Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao is crafted using a unique triple-maceration process that infuses Ferrand Cognac with bitter orange peels and spices. This method, combined with aging in oak barrels, creates a complex and balanced orange liqueur that's less sweet than typical curaçaos, making it ideal for classic cocktails like the Mai Tai.

  • Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao is actually made with bitter Curaçao oranges from the Caribbean island of Curaçao, along with sweet oranges from Spain. This unique blend gives it a more complex, less sugary flavor profile than most orange liqueurs.
  • The recipe for Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao is based on a 19th-century formula discovered in an old distiller's handbook, making it a historically accurate representation of the orange liqueur used in classic cocktails like the original Mai Tai.
  • Unlike many modern orange liqueurs, Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao is made with a Cognac base, which adds depth and complexity to its flavor. This makes it a favorite among bartenders for elevating classic cocktails and creating new, sophisticated drinks.

      The answer to less-than-ideal margaritas

By itself, it's a solid orange liqueur, but where it really shines is mixed with tequila. For years, I've been making margaritas with Cointreau or other triple sec, and while I loved the ones with Cointreau, I always found they were far too dry and needed some added sweetness, while the ones made with other clear triple secs I found to be underproof or artificial tasting. This is exactly the bottle I was looking for to fix that issue. If you want to improve your margarita game, this is now my go-to. It even works great in cosmos, though it does darken the color a bit.

Don't care how you say it.

Before I discovered curiada I had my local liquor store special order this for me.

I use it in margaritas, mai tais, etc. Have not found a drink that call for curacao it did not improve.

      Orange Goodness!

First off, let's dive into its flavor profile - this stuff is sweet, but not sickeningly so, and the best part is, it doesn't have that artificial taste you might find in some other orange liqueurs. Say goodbye to that harsh after bite you get with Cointreau - this baby is smooth as silk!

Now, let's get into the cocktails where this bad boy really shines. The Pegu Club is an absolute delight with this bottle, along with the Mai Tai. Trust me when I say, you haven't experienced a true Mai Tai until you've tried it with Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao. The rich orange essence dances effortlessly with the rum and other tropical flavors, giving you a sip that's both refreshing and sophisticated. The Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao, It's the real deal, and it's about to become a staple in your home bar. Cheers! 🍹
